The Problem
Insuring the business from costly claims
Founded in 1930, McComb Window & Door is a fourth-generation custom window and door builder and installer — and the longest-tenured partner in the Pella Direct Sales Network (PDSN). They’ve grown to complete more than 2,500 projects annually in and around the Indianapolis area.
The family of companies and branches in the Pella network regularly collaborate and share business ideas, so it was nothing new when Pella Windows & Doors of Omaha and Lincoln told McComb about CompanyCam. The product was presented to McComb as something that they (and all the PDSNs) could benefit from, especially when it comes to standardization, accountability, and liability protection.
The window and door industry especially needs a product like CompanyCam because they, more than most trades, encounter situations where clients may try to blame them for things like leaks, cracked drywall, and damaged products. Having a solid documentation process meant not only visibility into their jobs but also protection from costly lawsuits.
“You’re paying for protection in a way. So it’s kinda like you’re buying an insurance.”
The Solution
Utilizing more features for liability protection and growth
Knowing that it was already a great fit for legal protection, Dave and his team found more ways to get the most out of their investment in CompanyCam.
Their delivery crews take a photo of each line item product and its tag as they unload them at the job site so that they can ensure where and in what state the product is when it’s delivered or quickly identify if something is missing.
Photo documentation has also become vital to managing working relationships with subcontractors. With CompanyCam as part of the process, subcontractors can see the photos captured by the sales and measurement teams and report any differences they see on site.
“We’re trying to get to the point where we’re creating something where we’re not only taking job site photos… but also, from a legal standpoint, we’re protected because we’re showing what we’re doing on the job site.”
Insights
Planning for the future with confidence
In the long term, McComb Window & Door plans to recreate its showroom experience within CompanyCam to help its sales representatives educate leads on the products and finishes they offer. With all their showrooms in the pocket of sales professionals, they hope to acquire new customers straight from their living rooms.
In addition, they are working to make CompanyCam their all-in-one spot for installer training. They’re building out training videos and checklists with reference photos in the app to ensure that each product is installed to their specifications, no matter if it’s a repair tech or a new subcontractor who’s on site.
“It was insurance… now we’re looking again at the installation side. How can we help evolve the installers? On the sales side, how can we support the sales staff by using this tool so they could sell more.”
