But what they don’t want is for AI to speak on their behalf. In June 2026, we asked 460 contractors to rate nine AI jobs two ways:
- How much each one would help.
- How much they would trust it.
Two jobs scored highest on both. The first was flagging an invoice that has gone unpaid for 14 days. The second was alerting you when a crew member has not checked in by mid-morning. Two other jobs scored lowest on trust: writing proposals and posting to social media. So what does this mean? It means that contractors trust AI to watch for a problem and tell them about it, because the worst case is a false alarm. But, they do not trust it to send something to a customer with their name on it.
The real question isn’t “do you trust AI.” It’s “trust it to do what?”
Ask a contractor if he trusts AI and you’ll get a shrug or a flat no. Ask him whether he’d let it flag an invoice that’s two weeks overdue and you’ll get a different answer. That’s because trust isn’t general. It’s task by task, and the same person answers very differently depending on which job you name.
The survey scored each of the nine jobs on two separate things: how much it would help, and how much the contractor would trust it. Those two don’t move together. Across all nine tasks the average help score was 70% and the average trust score was 67%, but the spread between individual tasks is where the real signal lives. Some jobs are useful and trusted. Some are useful and not trusted yet. A couple are trusted but not that useful. Treating “AI” as one yes-or-no question misses all of it.
This is the part sentiment can’t tell you. Plenty of forums will tell you how contractors feel about AI in general. Almost none of them can tell you that the exact same contractor will hand over an overdue-invoice alert and refuse to let the same tool write a proposal.
